Since 1982, cancer has been the number one cause of death in Taiwan. From 1993 to 1998, the survival rate of those who have been diagnosed with cancer in Taiwan has been significantly lower than that of the United States. Therefore, since the year 2004, there has been an increase in the number of cancer centers in hospitals throughout Taiwan. In 2001, Kuang Tien became the only hospital in the Central Western Coast of Taiwan to be awarded a [Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center-Advancement of Oncology Treatment Quality Project] grant by the Department of Health’s Bureau of Health Promotion, with an extension to continue the work through another grant in 2004. The Center has a comprehensive cancer care facility, cancer care service, cancer care staff training, and cancer research.
