Background:
Daw Kyin Myaing is a 67 year old lady who lives in Yangon, Myanmar. She had been suffering from pain in both knees for more than six years. Prior to her visit to Kuang Tien General Hospital, she received conservative treatments from local doctors in Myanmar, which did not improve her condition. The pain in her knees became unbearable so with the encouragement of her friends and family she decided to fly to Taichung, Taiwan for further treatment. When she was admitted, she was sitting in a wheelchair as she had limited mobility on both knees, and her right knee was especially weak and painful. Her X-rays showed degeneration in both knee joints with marginal spur formations, which indicates osteoarthritis.  After a thorough consultation and examination by our Orthopedic specialists she was advised to have bilateral knee replacement surgery. The surgery was done smoothly by Dr Tseng ( Chan San Win ) who is an Orthopedic surgeon from Burma trained in Taiwan and she stayed in our surgical ward for post-operative care. By day three she was starting to stand and also begining Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) exercises for bilateral knee flexion and extension training. By day five she was able to walk with a walker and was discharged from Kuang Tien on the 8th day. In one months time she was on her way back home.
