Background:
Lowell is a 73 year old American motorcyclist who has logged over 350,000 miles travelling across the US and Canada. In 2013, he joined a group of American motorcyclists on an 8-day ride around the island. On one of the days riding in Central Taiwan, Lowell had a bad fall due to road conditions. He was sent directly to Kuang Tien’s Emergency Room and hospitalized. He had a head injury, fractured left shoulder, and limitation range of motion and multiple abrasion wounds over face and extremities. After reviewing his imaging results, Dr. Tseng, our Orthopedic surgeon who has treated many international patients, determined that Lowell needed surgery on his left shoulder.
His surgery was successful. However, he was here alone as the other riders had gone back to the US already, so during his two week hospital stay, we arranged for English speaking staff to accompany him. We also helped set up skype calls with his wife back in Kentucky. After two weeks, Dr. Tseng determined that Lowell was ready to be discharged, but due to his age, and the long flight back to Kentucky with many transfers, we coordinated with International SOS to arrange for a physician to fly with him back to the US. Since then, Lowell has followed Dr. Tseng’s rehabilitation program back at home and is now fully recovered and back on the road riding again.
