The recent economic recession has caused a steep increase in the levels of depression and stress experienced by employees all over Taiwan. The Kuang Tien General Hospital Psychiatry Clinic found that the increasing trend of employee stress has led to psychosomatic symptoms among patients. Recently, a patient who was sent to the emergency room for treatment of attempted suicide due to having been laid off by his employer. Kuang Tien General Hospital urges all citizens to appreciate the support of their surrounding family and friends, as a balance to putting forth the utmost effort at the workplace. Especially throughout the end-year holidays, such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve, which are common events are known to lead to “Holiday Depression Syndrome” The symptoms of this syndrome are grumpiness, lack of patience, and constant anger, extreme behaviors including self- mutilation and causing harm towards other people.
