Total 238 diabetic subjects aged over 20 years enrolled in the study. Serum glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), oxidative stress and related enzyme activities were determined. The health-related quality of life in patients was also evaluated using WHOQOL-BREF Taiwan version questionnaire which including physical health, psychological, social relations and environment domains. The mean scores of physical health quality-life were significantly higher in slightly bad controlled group (HbA1c = 7~8%) and poorly controlled group (HbA1c ≥ 8%) compared with well-controlled group (HbA1c ≤ 7%)(p<0.05) were noted, such that the scores were as followed: HbA1c = 7~8% group > HbA1c ≥ 8% group > HbA1c ≤ 7% group. However, HbA1c ≥ 8% group had the maximum levels of lipid peroxidation product (MDA), anti-oxidative enzyme SOD activities and the lowest activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase. It is suggested that both strictly and poorly control of HbA1c levels should affect the physical health quality-life of diabetic patients. Furthermore, blood oxidative stress markedly associated to the HbA1c levels, especially in diabetes.
